Raquel Kurpershoek

Nizami is een muziektheatervoorstelling waarvan de titel verwijst naar de 13de eeuwse Perzische dichter-filosoof Nizami Ganjavi. Hij is de auteur van De Zeven Wijze Prinsessen , een serie raamvertellingen en beschouwingen over de liefde in al zijn facetten en veelkleurigheid.

De voorstelling is een eigentijdse, persoonlijke interpretatie hiervan, een ode aan de diversiteit van het leven en de liefde. Zangeres Raquel Kurpershoek, gitarist Alejandro Hurtado en percussionist Danny Rombout brengen composities ten gehore in verschillende muziekstijlen die beantwoorden aan de veelzijdigheid van de liefde in de visie van Nizami. In de voorstelling speelt het visuele aspect een gelijkwaardige rol aan de muziek.

Het decor bestaat uit projecties die de poëtische sfeer van Perzisch-Indiase miniaturen weer tot leven brengen. De belichting is afgestemd op de kleurensymboliek die Nizami in zijn verhalen verwerkt.

Het publiek wordt aldus meegenomen op een muzikale reis door een sprookjesachtige, magische wereld die tegelijk herkenbaar is en geworteld in de actualiteit.

About Raquel

Raquel Kurpershoek has been the winner of several singing competitions, such as the Jazz Prinses Christina (2016) and the Zoetermeer Jazz Concours (2016). She recently (October 2022) received 3 awards at the Andrea Parodi World Music Festival: International Award, Best Music Award and the Bianco ’Aponte International Award. Raquel Kurpershoek Jaldón, born in 1998 in Amsterdam and raised between Holland and Spain. From a very young age she developed a great love for music. She has studied different music genres in the World Music department at the Conservatory in Rotterdam (NL), specializing in Latin American music, and also in Córdoba (SP) where she studied flamenco at the Rafael Orozco Conservatory. Raquel grew up in a family where art was always very present. From an Andalusian mother who is a flamenco dance teacher, she learned the joyful liveliness, the rhythms and melodies in combination with dance. Her father, art historian, writer and traveler taught Raquel from his travels the enormous musical wealth of each country he visited. In Raquel’s house there was never a lack of musical memories of his trips through Argentina, Ecuador, Brazil, Chile, Mexico, India and Cuba. It is in Raquel’s first EP entitled Mil Cosas where we can feel all these world music influences. Another of Raquel’s great passions is doing research into non-verbal communication. That was how she entered the world of deaf people. She was greatly attracted to them, which led her to study sign language. Sensing the underlying link between music and deaf culture, she began a very interesting experiment in the field of multimodality: transmitting everything experienced through a documentary: Traslasierra. Traslasierra is a moving autobiographical documentary in which these two seemingly opposite worlds form a surprising symbiosis. The documentary won prizes at several European filmfestivals. Raquel’s latest project is called NIZAMI. A tribute loaded with autobiographical symbolism inspired by the work The 7 Wise Princesses by the Persian medieval author and philosopher Nizami Ganjavi. A work full of magic, color and diversity of love that serves as inspiration for Raquel’s artistic composition. Turning this project into a beautiful musical poetry.
